Cutting up fruit

I love summer fruits : ) There is so much variety and every time I do the shopping I am able to get something different, you can never get bored of the fruits in summer. I find the same with fruit in our house as I do the vegetables- we are much more likely to eat them if they are washed and cut as as soon as we get home. I spoke about cutting up your vegetables a little while ago in this post but I just wanted to post this photo of this very yummy fruit salad as a reminder that this system works really well in summer as well for your fruit.

You are much more likely to pop some on your breakfast, take some to work, feed some to the kids for lunch if it is all already done for you. A lot of people commented in last Thursdays post about how I do it all and I honestly find it is simply habit now. You have to do something over 10 times for it to become habit- so if you think this would suit you make an effort for the month of January to decanter and chop up your fruits and vegetables as soon as you get home and before you know it you will be doing it without thinking!!

Timing your food shop is also key everyone is different but I have found afternoons work really well for us to do a food shop. So I do it when I get home from work and Flynn has just woken up from his nap. I take a myriad of snacks and quiet toys like cars, books etc to make the trip enjoyable and then when we get home I put a movie on whilst I unpack to keep Flynn occupied. It might work better for you to go in the morning but Flynn is way more active in the morning so it doesn't work for us. Timing this effectively will means less stress at the shops and more time to unpack properly when you get home.

Now I am off the eat some of that fruit salad : )

Hi Jen : ) I used a Tupperware Rock and serve but I think anything airtight would work. It lasted about 4-5 days but was all gone by the that last day anyway LOL. I find the salads last a good week.

Hi Jade!
Thank you for all the great ideas you are giving me through your blog. Just a quick question....how will you cut up your fruit/vegies when your little one comes along. I found I was able to put shopping away/split meat etc etc when I had one child but now I have two I struggle to do everything thoroughly.
Thanks,
Julie

No idea Julie- I will have to wait and see on that one !! Worst case scenario I would probably do it on a day that my husband gets home early, I will let you know in June : )

It is doable with more than one child.
1. Use Coles delivery so you don't have to go out and waste energy shopping.
2. Buy pre-cut fruit from veggie shops as a "treat" - still cheaper than a chocolate bar and a lot better for you!
3. Put your baby in the sling, your toddler in front of the DVD and chop fruit as usual. When your baby is bigger, put them in the high chair, and feed them fruit as you go.

... not that I ever get organised enough to do it, but it is possible! (I prefer to sew than chop fruit!)

When our boys were little (2 under 2) I found it easy to use sling for baby, and get toddler to 'help'.
Now they're older (5 and 3.5) it's easier to shop and pack away after dinner when DH can feed them, and I'm home before bedtime.

I wish we had home delivery here, though I do enjoy my grocery shopping time.

With 2 kids I often do mine at night once they are asleep. most nights both at in bed by 7pm and as soon as I finish reading to my eldest I get straigh in the car and head out. It's still early enough that I can put everything away and whatever else I have to do and still have time before bed. I guess it also helps the supermarket is only 5min drive away!

And I agree with the fruit side of things, it definately gets eaten more if it's already cut up. I leave things where my daughter can reach and during the day she will just grab a plate and make her own fruit salad.
